Who doesn’t love getting flowers on Valentine’s Day? You can make someone’s day and support Grandmont Rosedale Development Corporation’s Vacant Property Task Force with the 2nd Annual Rose Sale fundraiser.
For $5, you can have one rose hand-delivered to your sweetheart, neighbor, or friend within the Grandmont- Rosedale neighborhood, along with your personal message on a handcrafted card. For $50, you can surprise someone with a dozen roses.
If you’d like to support the fundraiser and give a rose to someone who lives outside the neighborhood, you can order them and pick up your ready-to-deliver roses at GRDC.
Order forms are available at GRDC’s office at 19800 Grand River. Supplies are limited and orders are first-come, first served. Roses will also be available to order at Always Brewing Detroit’s Valentine’s Day event, called “A ‘Lovely’ Market” from 6 to 9 p.m. on Feb. 6. Always Brewing is at 19180 Grand River.
Proceeds from the fundraiser will go to support the Vacant Property Task Force. The task force is made up of representatives from each of the Grandmont Rosedale neighborhoods who spend a great deal of their own time and money to track, maintain and secure vacant commercial and residential properties. Any money raised will go to secure vacant properties and purchase supplies like yard waste bags, gloves, etc.
An important project the task force will fund through proceeds from the rose sale is the treatment of vacant lots left behind by the waves of demolition that took down several blighted properties this fall. If left untouched, those lots can become magnets for illegal dumping, high weeds, and rodents. The Vacant Property Task Force plans to rehab the lots into wildflower fields, tree nurseries, or other uses based on the results of a community visioning session scheduled from 1-3 p.m. January 18. Some estimates suggest that costs to rehab the lots could go as high as $800 per lot, so funding is vey much needed.
