The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, a Miami-based national foundation has announced plans to give $19.25 million to the Detroit arts community over the next three years. The 3-year Knight Arts Challenge Detroit was an opportunity that Grandmont Rosedale Development Corporation could not pass up. Youth engagement has been a priority of GRDC as outlined in the Grandmont Rosedale Quality of Life Plan adopted in 2012. The Youth Engagement Task Force, born out of the Quality of Life Plan, has focused on a Creative Arts Summer Program for the youth who live in or around the Grandmont Rosedale Community. The first summer of the program was a huge success, having just presented its end of the summer Creative Arts Gallery on Saturday, August 25th. The 3-year Knight Arts Challenge Detroit contest asked one simple question: What’s your best idea for the arts? Grandmont Rosedale answered the question with our youth in mind. With over 1,400 applicants, Grandmont Rosedale Development Corporation was announced as a winner along with 55 other projects that will connect people with the arts in new ways, reclaim the city’s landscape, develop the next generation of creative thinkers and build on the city’s cultural legacy. With this new funding opportunity, Grandmont Rosedale will be able to continue its vision for a Creative Arts Program next summer in order to immerse our youth in the arts and to build social bonds between youth in the community.
