One Community - Five Neighborhoods -

During the early 20th century, the City of Detroit was booming, growing both in population and geographic size. Solidifying its reputation as the “Paris of the Midwest,” Detroit was known as a city with wide, tree-line boulevards. It was during this period of growth and grandeur that city planners began mapping out the Grandmont Rosedale neighborhoods. Today, the five neighborhoods that comprise the Grandmont Rosedale community remain one of Detroit’s premiere communities. There are three major commercial corridors in the area that are home to more than 250 active businesses. The corridors are McNichols Road, which acts as the northern boundary of the neighborhood, Schoolcraft Road, which acts as the southern boundary, and Grand River Avenue, which crosses diagonally through the middle of the community.

Below you’ll find a listing of assets in the Grandmont Rosedale community, including area schools, community organizations and some of our favorite businesses both in and around the community.

We have…

Community Organizations

  • Brilliant Detroit is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to building kid success families and neighborhoods where families with children 0-8 have what they need to be school-ready, healthy, and stable.

  • Scouts BSA Troop 123 was re-started in Fall of 2016 after a hiatus of about 10 years. The Troop meets at the North Rosedale Community House, 18445 Scarsdale St, Detroit, MI 48223, upstairs, on the 1st and 3rd Mondays, September through May (and only the 1st Monday in June) from 6:30 to 8pm. What is unique about our troop is we have an outing each month (contingent on weather). The scouts have activities such as camping, hiking, bike ridings, and have many experiences other youth may not have been exposed to like – spending the night on a World War 2 carrier ship, cave exploring, luge (like bobsledding but in summer), horseback riding.

If you have boys aged 11-17 who enjoy the outdoors, wish to know more about the outdoors or just love adventure, please come to attend a meeting with the boys of Troop 123!

  • Kids from the Grandmont Rosedale neighborhoods play ball every spring in Rosedale Grandmont Baseball League, an instructional/recreational league supported by all the neighborhood associations.

Founded in 1992, the league is open to boys and girls ages 3-16 in Metro Detroit and is an all-volunteer effort. All families are expected to help in some way: managing, coaching, preparing fields, publicizing, organizing, fundraising, picture day, etc.

The season runs from mid-April through late June; Opening Day is usually the last Saturday in April. Games are played at local fields. Online registration can be done at any time beginning in February.

The season starts with practices throughout April with our Opening Day (complete with parade and ceremonies) around the end of the month. Games are scheduled through the end of June. The league is represented by our all-stars in area tournaments in July and August. All the work in the administration of the league is done by volunteers.

  • The Rosedale Fun Litter Pickup Club was founded in March of 2017 in response to the growing litter problem in our community. One of the many things that makes our historic neighborhood special is our pride and sense of community. It is this pride that inspired a small band of residents to pioneer our war on trash.

  • In 2010, Chefs Kristen Ussert and Erika Boyd decided to adopt a vegan diet after losing Erika’s father to cancer. Erika began experimenting with “veganizing” family recipes to bring that wholesome familiarity to our new found cuisine. The food became a hit with family and friends and we began planning menus for what would become Detroit Vegan Soul meal delivery and catering. Kirsten developed the business plan and two years later, with a shared entrepreneurial spirit, Erika’s culinary creativity, and Kirsten’s business and marketing acumen, we opened Detroit’s first 100% vegan soul food cafe in historic West Village.

  • The Redford Theatre opened on January 27, 1928 as a neighborhood movie house. It was billed as America’s Most Unique Suburban Playhouse. The theatre, with its three-story grand foyer and full-size stage, has been in continuous operation ever since. This was fortunate, since it enabled the Redford and its theatre organ to escape the ravages of neglect that resulted in the destruction of many movie palaces.
